Egypt is finally going digital with a new website for passport and emigration administration. The Ministry of Interior joined forces with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology to create a website for the general administration of passports, emigration, and nationality, as a part of the modernization campaign that’s promising to reduce the time citizens have to spend at the office.
The website is designed to offer services that are normally provided at the department where you have to go in person. You can now find out detailed information about all services as well as information on required documents on the official website online -- no more scrolling through Facebook posts just to find out what documents you need to renew your passport, although we’ve already covered that for you anyways.
Thankfully, the website offers some e-services as well. Individuals can now apply for Egyptian citizenship for children of an Egyptian mother and Egyptian citizenship for the foreign wife of an Egyptian citizen, all from the comforts of your home without having to stand in queues. The website will also include other options: documentation to prove citizenship and applying for foreign citizenship. Although the website is more for the long-processing requests, we’ve got big hopes -- a time where we don’t have to run around finishing paperwork just to be told “come back in 10 days.”
Only recently, the office moved from Tahrir to the new Abbassiya office, and this modernization campaign is looking to further reduce the overcrowding at the office.
